Annotated History of the Greywind Tea Company

World Info

Fundamentally, the world uses the rules and conventions of DnD to embellish a fantastical and fictionalized story in a tropical fantasy setting with steampunk and solarpunk elements that is overlaid upon historical versions of the conventional world map. The populations within are very much DnD standard, with a few deviations that are explained.

At its base: Cecily is the heir apparent to an anarchist organization that operates under the cover of a trade and mercantile company that focuses on spices, tea, and dry goods. She is college educated and has worked in the field for her family for long enough to be considered one of the spymasters out in the field. She is assigned a young apprentice in the form of a 19 year old outlander called Lili, who claims to have connections that reach further North than the Greywind Tea Company typically travels. While on an assignment where they teamed up with Genya, a strange Genasi that was Cecily's old college friend, Lili went missing mere hours before large, unnatural storm swept in and created a deluge that flooded the small town where the Tea Company had made it's base.

It is only weeks into the clean-up that they realize Lili is among the missing, and Cecily sets out to find her.

Reuniting with Genya in the disaster zone, the two of them decided to join forces in their search for Lili. They set off together for the last known clue they had about her goals: The Sweetwater Sea, towards the South.

Along the way they are attacked and taken prisoner by hired rogues demanding information on a mysterious entity called Flick-- and they forced Genya to watch while they tortured Cecily for information-- with the both of them under the combined effects of a magic cancelation spell and a Zone of Truth spell. Neither could resist, and neither had satisfactory info. Instead, Cecily revealed information that she had sworn to keep quiet, endangering lives, and Genya spilled that he was the illegitimate son of the King from the underwater kingdom that was one part of the constant border disputes that compelled the Tea Company to be formed in the first place.

Their rescue was forced by a foreign player-- an entity with black wings and a shock of hair as bright as the sunset, that razed the stronghold where the two were being kept. The rogues were all killed-- even the ones that tried to flee, and only Cecily and Genya remained to lick their wounds.

When the dust cleared, the entity revealed itself as someone familiar, and it was Lili's face that had bought them freedom before bidding them to turn back.

Unfortunately, that was impossible now that they were so close.

This incident is the reason why Cecily chose the name Honesty-- as penance for her weakness and her sins.

If it helps you: Yes, Honesty is Fantasy Florida Woman. Deal with it.

Canon Point: After recovering from her time being held captive and interrogated, and starting on her quest further South.

★ Folkmore Roles & Attributes ★

Skills:

- Theatrical Skills, in terms of acting, costuming, dance, and stage craft. She is excellent at disguises and has been known to show off her sleight of hand skills for a few laughs.

- Swordplay. Preferably with a rapier or any weapon that relies on her dexterity

- Lockpicking, because why not?

- Critical Analysis. As the heir to a long-standing organized crime institution, she has major skills in managing people-- both understanding what drives them and how to influence them. She is as likely to use this to aid or charm someone as she is to blackmail or intimidate someone.

- Economics and Business. The organized crime institution that is the Greywind Tea Company isn't called that for show. The roots of the organization are indeed a trading company that specialized in spices and teas, because they were among the lightest, most useful, and most profitable items to trade. She is very business savvy, when she chooses to be.

- Faking It. This is how her disguises work, along with a heavy dose of Method Acting. She is very capable of watching someone and picking up at least superficial levels of skills on the fly and uses this primarily in her role to draw attention to herself so that others can do what needs to be done.

- Fire Starter. The name Greywind didn't come from anything practical, but is a florid epithet for how her forebears committed arson on the manors of corrupt lords in order to make a point. The ash would be so thick at times that it appeared as dense as a fog-- a grey wind rolling in off the sea

- Tea Master. Honesty has spent her life around culinary experts, and especially those who primarily focused on the art of tea. She is excellent at both blending and brewing the perfect cup, but also helping others determine which blend would best suit their tastes. She prides herself in being able to craft a tea that suits every palate.

- Center of Attention. She is very aware that she is a rainbow colored unicorn in nearly every crowd that she engages with because of her blue complexion and her antlers alone. She takes advantage of this, often working to charm crowds and make dramatic displays to keep everyone's eyes on her so that people don't notice what's happening in the background.

Canon Abilities: Her magic abilities are very minor. They are as follows:

- Illusions and Glamour with limited duration, as it affects her person or the surroundings she interacts with.

- Blindsight. She is from a tropical region and her ancestors cut a deal with a spirit from that region. Rather than having low-light vision, she can see in conditions where it would otherwise be too bright to sea-- like on the open sea.

- Burning Damage/ Heat Resistance. She is not very susceptible to fire or heat related conditions. As a trade off, she does not do well in the cold.

Role: Familiar

Role Qualities/Attributes: As a Tiefling, she already has antlers. However, her status as a harbinger of potential doom to her family can be manifested by her gaining bird-like attributes related to sea birds and, more specifically, becoming primarily a crane of an albatross. If she ends up maintaining wings at any point, that would fit the aesthetic. Tieflings in her world do occasionally manifest with wings, even if she didn't by default.

Role Reasoning: Honesty may be a rainbow colored unicorn with immense levels of charisma, but she is still ultimately a character whose actions change definition depending on who is the one telling her story. Additionally, she is the sort of character who prefers to work within and alongside a group of people-- not alone. Never alone. She is at her best when she has a battle partner, in part because her base stats are not geared for entering into battle as a major combatant.

She shines when she is acting to support a cause that's greater than herself, and takes repeated measures to remind herself to stay humble.

★ Personality ★

Please choose one of the follow options for your personality section. Please clarify which option you have picked and, if option 2, which questions you are answering:

Option 1. Summarize your character's personality in general and what their full potential would look like to them and what they would be willing to go through to meet that potential and what gaining that potential would mean to them. 400-800 word requirement.

Option 2. Choose FOUR-FIVE of the following questions to answer and expand upon. You may choose a fifth question if you feel it is integral to your character's personality. Each answer has a 100-300 word requirement.

OPTION 2 QUESTIONS (PICK 4-5) 100-300 WORD LIMIT EACH:

  • What was the most traumatic experience your character endured? How did this change them?

The most traumatic experience to date for Honesty was the recent incident wherein she was forced to reveal truths under torture and broke under the pressure. Until that point, she had believed herself to be made of tougher materials-- but she had never been tested in quite that way. A calculating individual by nature, with a long honed skill in controlling and manipulating her stage, having everything torn from that control by force and her inner fragility revealed was more terrible than the pain she endured. Scars heal, but being violated in that manner is a trauma that will take time.

The extent of the physical damage is surface level. None of the wounds were so deep that they couldn't be treated with patience and time. The emotional damage, however, has reaches that she hasn't even fully plumbed yet. Honesty is guilt ridden and jumpy, uncertain of her worth to her people, and she chooses to cover that by digging her heels down into her dramatics and her theatrics.

No one is more wary of the truth than Honesty herself is, and she is painfully aware of this fact.

  • What experience challenged your character's core beliefs? How did they handle this or change from it?

  • What is the most important and defining relationship(s) in your character's life and why?

  • What is a headcanon (or two) you feel strongly about and that you prefer playing your character with? How is this supported in canon and why do you think it benefits the character's story?

  • What is your character's moral code? Do they have one? Why or why not?

Honesty's moral code is simple: the people in power do not care about the people that they step on. Ultimately, people only have their families, neighbors, and communities to rely on in a crisis, and building a strong support network within those communities is the key to survival. These beliefs were born of generations of her family living in a town on a contested border and being shuffled back and forth between kingdoms that never bothered to check in and see what the people wanted-- and of the people in that town and others like it along the border not having the resources to fight for their needs.

This was why the Greywind Tea Company was founded by her ancestor -- and why Honesty puts the needs of her community above her own, at nearly any cost.

Nearly. She is always more than willing to burn and pillage if it means the children of her town will be fed. But, this belief is also what causes her to throw herself in harm's way. She is a Greywind-- and the ancient demon her ancestor formed a pact with will see that everything they built is destroyed if anyone in her family uses the weapons and tools they were given for personal gain. As a Tiefling of that bloodline, she is a living reminder of this pact-- and with that burden of carrying a message she feels duty bound to live for the sake of the people of her town as much as she is able.

After all, she knows in her bones that she will probably be called to destroy it herself if she can't be a living example of what her family should be doing.

Unfortunately, she's learned the truth: she is unwilling to die for this role.

  • What are your characters dreams and nightmares? Do you believe they are more likely to obtain one rather than the other?

  • If you could give your character a Taylor Swift playlist, which songs would be on it and what would they represent about your character?

  • What does your character feel like they struggle with still? Where could they improve? This could be physically, mentally, emotionally, or otherwise.

  • Is your character capable of forgiveness or will they hold a grudge until they die? Would anything ever make them change their mind?

  • If your character could change one thing about their past, what would it be and why? Or why not?

  • What is your character's safespace? When do they feel the most settled and comfortable? When do they feel confident and relaxed?

Honesty feels most relaxed and herself when she's relaxing in a quiet tea house, not when she's on stage. While she's a skilled actor and theater professional, she prefers the simple hospitality of getting to know someone so well that you always keep some of their preferred drink on hand-- be it coffee, tea, or even hot cocoa. She lives by the creed that no one will ever understand each other until they share a meal together-- the intimacy of the act of sharing food, preparing tea, and telling stories are what reminds her of the beautiful little things in life.

As much as she is willing and able to be the glittering star on the stage, she that isn't something she would choose for herself. The small acts that illuminate another person's spirit are what helps her feel alive.

  • What would your character sacrifice to get what they want or to reach their potential? What have they sacrificed already?

  • What famous folklore, legend, or myth would you associate your character with? Are they literally inspired by Snow White? Do they have similar struggles or energy as Red Riding Hood?

Honesty was built around the archetypes surrounding the French gentleman thief Arsene Lupin. She acts with a distinct charm and panache that is evident usually in characters that fall into these tropes, and she likes to see herself as a force that is ultimately good, even if that means breaking the law. The people who made the laws are not the people abiding by them, and they can be treated more like guidelines than firm commandments. Unlike a lot of characters in this archetype, however, she has a malleable view about killing people.

Some people are too dangerous to allow to live. She knows it's not her right to decide, but sometimes survival, either her own or someone else, is more important than that of a person who would turn around and intentionally hurt people. She does not like it when these choices are forced upon her-- but, sometimes there isn't a choice.

  • Which Taylor Swift era is your character going through right now and why?

  • What is a time where your character failed drastically at something and how did it impact them, what did they do about it?
